growing old and grey

There is this old couple at church that always sit in the "young people's" section during the late service. Every week they're there, without fail. The man is sometimes alone at first, sitting and smiling, waiting for his wife. I'm guessing she is at the church library, since she often comes down the aisle with a book.

She appears to have had a stroke, or something of the sort and uses a walker. The dear woman moves very slow, and you can tell it takes alot out of her to be walking. Her husband stands up in the second or third row, and watches her come down the aisle towards him. She is smiling the whole time, and he smiles back. Once she reaches the pew, she grabs ahold of him, or the pew (sometimes us students that are closeby) and slowly (almost painfully) eases herself into the pew. Her husband then takes the walker down to the front of the sanctuary (so as not to block the aisle), and sits down with his wife.

When it comes time to stand up and greet people around us, this woman dishes out huge smiles. The man is sweet and smiley as well. During the service, she might mention something, he leans in and smiles at her. She sometimes falls asleep, but he looks over and smiles.

There is something about this couple that makes me smile and want to cry at the same time. Every week I sit and watch the two of them, and every week I get all teary. There is something that just makes sense with those two, and feels...right. I can't really explain it, it's just one of those things that is good and lovely, and you know that it's the way things should be. An old man and an old lady, all sweet and smiley together.

Gee, I'm really sentimental and warm and fuzzy these days. Next week's blog: bunnies, babies and princessy things.
